Brigitte Lacombe, a native of France who lives in New York, is likely still largely unknown by name in the German book trade. And yet there is one iconic photograph of hers that is familiar to almost everyone. It is the cover photo that so beautifully adorns our Isabella Rossellini autobiography, *Some of Me*. She ranks among the very greatest female photographers in the contemporary film and theater scenes in France and the U.S. Her black-and-white portraits of actors and directors—including Jean-Luc Godard, Robert Altman, Woody Allen, Roberto Rossellini, Robert de Niro, Arthur Miller, Gérard Depardieu, Glenn Close, Winona Ryder, Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, Dustin Hoffman, Jeanne Moreau, Isabella Adjani, and Joseph Losey—to name just a few—bear witness to a level of trust from the stars and an intimacy between the photographer and her capricious subjects that is extremely rare in this profession.
