The Last Generation on Ice

Only until July 19, 2026

For over 25 years , Copeland has been a leading figure in international conservation and art photography . He has been named Photographer of the Year four times by various institutions. His work is exhibited worldwide and published in renowned publications such as GEO, National Geographic, Vanity Fair, and The New York Times. He has published six books on the polar regions and is also a sought-after speaker at institutions such as the United Nations, COP21 in Paris, and TEDx . What is particularly impressive is how his photographs came to be: he has led 27 polar expeditions, covering over 12,000 km on skis. Among other feats, he crossed Antarctica from coast to coast, covering over 4,100 kilometers.

On his journeys through the polar regions, Copeland is exposed to extreme conditions—glacial crevasses, encounters with polar bears, and temperatures as low as minus 60 degrees are part of his daily life. He consciously accepts this primal and awe-inspiring natural environment. He sees himself as an ambassador for a world of overwhelming beauty that is, at the same time, increasingly under threat.

Few people get a glimpse of this fragility. This makes Copeland’s commitment to capturing these fleeting moments through photography and making them accessible to a wide audience all the more important. “Helping people fall in love with this world,” says Copeland, “is a catalyst for the desire to protect it.” Because, “when nature speaks and we don’t listen, photography lets us hear with our eyes.”

The exhibition at the Haus der Fotografie spans three floors and explores the Greenlandic Arctic through Copeland’s lens. Sixty-seven photographs and several films offer striking perspectives on the beauty and vulnerability of this unique natural world and its inhabitants. Copeland succeeds in bridging the gap between the real, ephemeral landscape and the audience’s perception of it. His images captivate viewers—they move, fascinate, and leave a lasting impression. Hardly anyone can resist the power and beauty of Greenland’s icy world.

In 2024, Copeland's new book, *The Arctic: A Darker Shade of White*, was published by Rizzoli. Visit us at the IPFO Shop and discover this book in person.

Sebastian Copeland is an award-winning photographer, polar explorer, and environmentalist, and is considered one of the most prominent adventurers of our time. After starting out as a fashion and advertising photographer on Madison Avenue, he now devotes himself to documenting endangered habitats—particularly the Arctic. On expeditions under extreme conditions, he creates striking portraits of both icebergs and the Inuit people of Greenland, which bear witness to both great beauty and transience.
