The workshop for photographers who struggle with self-promotion
Dario Veréb is the photo editor of the *NZZ am Sonntag* and regularly commissions freelance photographers for the Sunday edition. In search of new collaborators, he spends hours clicking and scrolling through portfolio websites and social media channels. How does he decide who gets the assignment? Which portfolios stick in his mind, and which ones don’t?
The workshop focuses on the recipient’s perspective: Participants’ online presences are analyzed, discussed, and specifically refined on the spot. Each person leaves with a clear understanding of how they are actually perceived by editorial teams and clients—and what can be done to change that.

Market Conditions
The workshop begins with an overview. Participants introduce themselves and describe their situations. This is followed by an honest look at the market: Where are the lucrative areas of photography today, and what has changed in recent years?
Portfolio Website Analysis
Your own website is your most important calling card. What does a website that captures attention and generates business look like? Curation, structure, navigation, content, and contact information: We’ll take a close look at the participants’ websites together.
Instagram as a Strategic Tool
What are the real benefits of a professional Instagram presence, and what isn't necessary? We'll discuss what makes photographers' accounts stand out and how to track changes in the algorithm.
Business Development
How do you reach out to newsrooms and companies without getting lost in the shuffle? What happens on the recipient's end when a request comes in, and what sets a good request apart from one that goes unanswered?
Formal Matters
The workshop is designed as a discussion. Participants bring real-life situations to share and receive direct feedback. The day ends with a personal action plan session: Each person outlines their specific next steps.

About the Instructor
Dario Veréb is the photo editor of the *NZZ am Sonntag* and is responsible for the visual presentation of the Sunday edition. He decides which photographers to commission, selects images, develops visual concepts, and has a deep understanding of the market based on his daily experience.
Raised in the Zurich Unterland region, he completed an internship at the Swiss photo agency Keystone-SDA in 2017 and subsequently studied journalism at the School of Applied Linguistics in Zurich. While still a student, he worked as a freelancer in the NZZ photo department; in 2022, he was offered a permanent position. Since 2024, he has been in charge of the “NZZ am Sonntag.”
His work focuses on documentary photography, a critical examination of image manipulation, images on social media, and visual reporting on China.
